A well-sharpened edge tool is a woodworker's best friend, but protecting those razor-sharp edges when tools are stored is just as critical for the edge itself and for the safety of your fingers.

Commercial slip-on rubber or plastic caps may work for standard-sized chisels, but they fall short when dealing with oversized framing chisels, wide carver's gouges, or uniquely shaped carving tools.

In such situations, making your own custom protective cover is the best path forward. This article explores a traditional approach to crafting a riveted leather edge scabbard using simple materials and an inexpensive kit.

## Simple Materials and an Inexpensive Kit

To build a custom edge scabbard, you don't need a specialized leatherworking shop. The required tool kit is minimal, accessible, and very budget-friendly:

## Selecting the Right Leather

Before cutting a single piece of material, you must choose the right type of leather. While grabbing scraps from an old jacket or a dress belt might be tempting, you must use vegetable-tanned leather (often labeled as veg-tan or tooling leather).

Vegetable-tanned leather is acid-free, non-corrosive, holds its shape remarkably well, and is completely safe for long-term contact with fine carbon steel. It is essential to avoid chrome-tanned leather, which can accelerate oxidation and etch rust into your freshly honed edge.

## The Welted Construction

To build a proper guard that protects both the tool and your hardware, you need a multi-layer sandwich: a bottom cover, a top cover, and a U-shaped middle spacer known as a welt. The welt creates a dedicated cavity for the blade while preventing the razor-sharp edge from slicing directly into your copper rivets.

To build the core sandwich, calculate the width of your chisel or gouge blade and add 1-1/4" to this measurement. Cut two rectangular pieces of leather (the front and back covers) to this calculated width, ensuring they are long enough to cover the cutting edge and extend comfortably up the blade.

Fashioning the welt requires cutting a third piece of leather to the exact same outer dimensions. Place your chisel centered on this middle piece, trace the outer contour of the blade to form a U-shaped outline, and carefully cut out the interior section with a sharp utility knife or heavy-duty craft shears.

## Precision Scuffing and Glue-Up

Once your layers are cut to shape, careful surface prep guarantees a lasting bond before setting any hardware. Orient the grain of the leather so the rough flesh sides of both the top and bottom covers face inward toward the center welt.

Selective scuffing should be limited strictly to the U-shaped mating tracks where the glue is applied-never on the interior pocket surface, which should remain smooth so the tool inserts cleanly. Sand off the smooth finish on the grain face(s) of your U-shaped welt using 60-grit sandpaper to open the pores and increase mechanical adhesion.

Apply an even layer of glue along the U-shaped glue tracks of the welt, and lay the glued U-shaped welt onto the bottom leather panel, aligning the edges carefully. Top it with the upper panel and clamp the sandwich firmly around the perimeter using spring clamps or hand-screws, allowing it to fully cure before moving on to drilling and setting the rivets.
