Design studio ADC & Tuneu has completed a comprehensive redesign of the public areas in Stockholm's Sheraton hotel...

The Sheraton Stockholm hotel has reopened its public spaces following a complete redesign by the studio ADC & Tuneu. Founded by Aaron Clarke and Marta Tuneu, the studio was tasked with reimagining the lobby, bars, restaurant, and meeting areas of the hotel, which first opened in 1971 as Europe's inaugural Sheraton.

ADC & Tuneu conducted extensive research into Swedish design heritage, drawing inspiration from architect Gunnar Asplund and the traditional Falu red pigment used on timber houses. The studio's vision, according to Marta Tuneu, was to honor the building's 1970s origins while creating warm, vibrant spaces rooted in Scandinavian identity but marked by expressive geometry.

Ground Floor and Mezzanine Interventions

Architectural changes on the ground and mezzanine floors have consolidated the lobby bar, reception, co-working zones, dining, a juice bar, and a gym into a unified lifestyle environment. A double-height atrium is anchored by an oblong-shaped bar named Sally's Bar. A new staircase with a bold red balustrade connects the levels.

Structural columns are clad in cream mosaic tile and fitted with bespoke copper light fixtures. A mural by Barcelona illustrator Claudia Capdevila wraps the mezzanine, introducing color and pattern. The furnishings mix mid-century-inspired seating in geometric Nordic wool fabrics with built-in sofas custom-designed by ADC & Tuneu. Table and bar tops use mixed woods and lacquered finishes reflective of the 1970s. Lighting from Santa & Cole and DCW éditions is employed throughout.

Restaurant and Breakout Area Details

The new restaurant, Mr. Bronck, features a more restrained design language. Its interior uses dark-stained timber joinery and multi-colored recycled marble mosaic flooring by Barcelona designers Leleni. The seating includes 1970s-inspired chairs and bar stools from Cizeta, alongside custom sofas by ADC & Tuneu manufactured by Grassoler. Oversized ribbed cylindrical pendant lights dominate the ceiling.

A first-floor breakout area serving meeting rooms centers on a statement bar with a marble top and veined timber front. The seating combines retro chrome-framed modular sofas with pieces from studios NG Design and Nobilis. Custom geometric rugs by ADC & Tuneu in red and cream define zones on dark timber flooring. Textured glass-block tile columns and woven wallcoverings form the backdrop.

Furnishings and Art in Ballrooms

The hotel's two ballrooms draw on traditional Swedish floral patterns translated into contemporary carpets and textiles. Both are designed for flexible reconfiguration. Specific furnishings and lighting are detailed for each space.

Aaron Clarke stated the project aimed to reconnect the hotel to city life, with every detail from lighting to furniture considered for a cohesive experience. The redesign incorporates art, including photography by Cristina Voira and Swedish accessories from Svenskt Tenn, continuing the hotel's art programme. The project balances the building's legacy with a contemporary, unmistakably Scandinavian identity.
