Red Sea Global Launches DarkSky Resort
Red Sea Global and DarkSky International have created the first certification for resorts that protect natural night skies through responsible outdoor

Red Sea Global (RSG) and DarkSky International have launched the world's first certification for resorts that protect natural night skies. The new DarkSky Approved Lodging & Resort program recognizes properties that implement responsible outdoor lighting to benefit wildlife and create stargazing experiences.
Desert Rock and Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, at The Red Sea are the first two resorts to be certified under this new framework. The certification builds upon an existing DarkSky Approved Lodging program launched in 2023.
Principles of Responsible Lighting
Responsible outdoor lighting is presented as a key part of regenerative development. The principles aim to minimize artificial light at night. This reduces energy consumption and preserves natural darkness.
Preserving the natural light-dark cycle is crucial for protecting biodiversity. Nocturnal and light-sensitive species depend on it. The source specifically mentions sea turtle hatchlings, which use the natural brightness of the night sky over the sea to orient themselves toward the ocean. These practices also create opportunities for stargazing and astrotourism.
Developing the Resort Standard
The new resort certification was developed through a collaboration between the two organizations. During a review of RSG's nominated resorts for the original lodging program, DarkSky International found its existing standards did not fully address the operational needs of resort destinations.
While outdoor lighting at most lodging properties is limited, resorts typically require more extensive lighting. DarkSky International invited RSG to co-develop dedicated resort guidelines. This established a consistent framework and best practices for certification.
A representative from DarkSky International stated, "Red Sea Global’s commitment to sustainable, DarkSky-friendly design created an opportunity to evolve our Lodging program."
Certification Requirements and Growth
The DarkSky Approved Lodging & Resort program helps travelers identify destinations that offer exceptional night skies while meeting rigorous environmental standards. Both the Lodging and Resort certifications require exceptional dark skies, considerate outdoor lighting, and a rigorous review by DarkSky’s lighting team.
RSG stated it is integrating responsible lighting into every stage of development to protect the ecological integrity of the night environment. The developer says this sets a new benchmark for regenerative tourism.
RSG now has 15 resorts open across three destinations. The company states it will continue expanding DarkSky compliance across its portfolio. It plans to support additional resorts in achieving certification as new properties open.
