The German Ambassador's Residence in the UK, a Grade I listed building, has undergone a comprehensive renovation led by Seifermann Architects. Markus Seifermann, the firm's founder, explained the project required a full refurbishment that respected strict heritage requirements while creating an environment fit for high-level diplomacy.

Working with the German government and the Ambassador, the architects followed a clear philosophy to specify German products wherever possible. This was to shows German engineering and manufacturing quality. The selection process for all fittings, including those for bathrooms, was rigorous.

Strategic Product Selection for Different Spaces

Product specification required a nuanced approach based on location and usage. High-traffic public areas needed robust, hard-wearing products, while private suites could feature more distinctive fixtures. Price points were also calibrated to the specific area and its function.

Every fitting had to align with the building's heritage, creating a cohesive design. Markus Seifermann stated the selections needed to be "classy and oozing a certain confidence without being too loud." This guided the final choices.

For the Ambassador's private bathroom, the team chose the AXOR Uno 100 single lever basin tap with a loop handle in a brushed bronze finish. Guest ensuite bathrooms were fitted with the hansgrohe Croma 220 1 Jet thermostatic mixer in chrome. Both AXOR and hansgrohe brands were selected to provide all bathroom fittings and tapware throughout the residence.

Durability as a Non-Negotiable Requirement

Longevity was a primary driver for the project. Seifermann confirmed that durability was a main concern, noting the embassy cannot be renovated every decade and must last. The residence's unique usage patterns, with ambassadors serving four-year terms and hosting hundreds of guests, meant fixtures would face constant use from a rotating cast of users.

The architects chose companies with a proven track record of quality and durability. AXOR and hansgrohe's reputation for longevity and innovation made them a natural fit for this demanding environment.

Coordinated Finishes Create Design Harmony

A sophisticated aspect of the specification was the coordinated use of finishes. Both brands offered a comprehensive range, including polished chrome, brushed bronze, and matt black. This allowed the design team to select appropriate finishes for different areas, creating a thematic coherence throughout the building.

Seifermann explained this approach meant they could coordinate elements from ironmongery and door handles right through to showers and taps. In suites and private quarters, a brushed bronze finish conveyed understated luxury. For example, suites feature the hansgrohe Raindance Select S PowderRain 240 shower set in brushed bronze.

In standard areas and public bathrooms, such as staff toilets, a chrome finish was selected for fixtures like the Hansgrohe Talis E 110 single lever basin tap. Seifermann noted that even if visitors don't consciously notice the brand, they will feel the premium quality of a matched environment.

Ease of Maintenance and Sustainability

Simplicity of maintenance was key for a property with frequent staff turnover. With a new team arriving every four years with each ambassador, the building is exposed to different skills. AXOR and hansgrohe products were chosen for their intuitive designs and straightforward maintenance protocols.

Sustainability credentials were also essential, driven by government expectations for water efficiency. Engineers evaluated water flow reduction technologies, particularly for public toilet areas. Seifermann confirmed there is an expectation that water flow rates are considered, an area where both specified brands excel with their water-saving innovations.

Since the project's completion, feedback from the German Embassy has been positive. Seifermann reported that visitors, including high-ranking guests, are delighted with the residence, feeling the overall quality even if they don't notice individual details. The bathrooms have been praised for their elegant aesthetic and intuitive functionality.
