Kreg Tool has launched the Edge, a 20V cordless loose tenon joiner. Preorders for the tool begin on September 8th, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $449.99 for the bare tool and $499.99 for a kit with a 4Ah battery and charger.

According to a review from Popular Woodworking, the Edge represents the first major competition for the Festool Domino, a benchmark tool in the category. The reviewer, after several months of use, states the tool cuts "accurate, consistent, and tight-fitting" mortises.

Fence and Adjustment Features

A primary differentiator is the fence. The Edge features a large, wide fence with a substantial handle designed to provide ample control. The reviewer notes this design makes it easy to position and hold squarely against a workpiece, which could be particularly helpful for woodworkers new to this joinery method.

Adjustments use imperial measurements. Both the fence height adjustment and the quick stop are marked in inches, a detail the review calls "a welcome touch" to avoid metric conversions. The mortise width is also adjustable through three settings, allowing a choice between a tight fit and one with more room for easier assembly.

Performance and Dust Collection

The tool's core function is to cut mortises for loose tenon joinery. The review confirms it performs this task effectively. Dust collection is rated as very good when a hose is connected, managing chips well. Without a hose, slots in the baseplate allow chips to fall through, though the tool is described as "considerably cleaner and more accurate" with dust extraction attached.

Platform and Future Options

Currently, the Edge is only available as a cordless tool running on Kreg's Blue Ion battery platform. The review mentions there have been user requests for a corded version, but it is unknown if Kreg will add one to the product lineup. The tool's introduction follows the expiration of patents on the Festool Domino.

The review establishes the tool's capability before examining its features. "With that established, let's look at what sets the Edge apart," the source states, pivoting to a discussion of its design distinctions. The article finishes on the note of its cordless-only status and market anticipation.
